In an effort to maximize the last opportunity for Audi and Champion Racing to win their third Manufacturer’s Championship title in the SPEED World Challenge GT series, the Audi Certified Champion RS 6 team has opted to compete with three Audi RS 6s at this weekend’s final race of the season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Sunday, October 17.
Peter Cunningham will return as the third driver for the Audi Certified Champion RS 6 team joining season regulars Michael Galati and Randy Pobst. Cunningham first drove the all-wheel-drive quattro Audi RS 6 last month at Road Atlanta. Audi is currently tied with Cadillac (48 points) for the Manufacturers’ title. Five-time World Challenge Champion Michael Galati olds a slim lead for the Drivers’ Championship ahead by only four points of Tommy Archer and his Dodge Viper.
“The team has worked incredibly hard all year long and has consistently prepared competitive and reliable cars,” said Mike Peters, Team Manager. ”
We feel it is necessary to do whatever we can in order to retain the Manufacturer’s Championship. Running a third car makes mathematical sense.”
SCCA Pro Racing Ltd. announced recently another adjustment affecting the restrictor size change for the SPEED World Challenge GT class Audi RS 6, effective immediately. Stated in Tech Bulletin #13, the Audi RS 6 will go from a 49.4 percent restrictor prior to each turbocharger to a 41.2 percent (34.5mm) air restrictor.> The SPEED World Challenge GT Championship will be decided Sunday, October 17 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Live television coverage will be provided by the SPEED Channel at 4:00 p.m. (Eastern), 1:00 p.m. locally.
Randy Pobst (Gainesville, GA). “I’m coming to Laguna Seca as part of one of the best teams in the World Challenge GT series. I intend to give 100% and do all I can to keep my Certified Audi RS 6 competitive given the circumstances. The points are still very close and with some luck, we may prevail.”
Michael Galati (Olmsted, OH). “I think we’ll be more competitive at Laguna Seca than we were at Road Atlanta. I hope for this fight we have a gun like everybody else instead of a knife like we had at Road Atlanta. Time will tell.”
Peter Cunningham (West Bend, WI). “It’s great to be back with Champion Racing and to get back in to the Audi RS 6. I’m not sure what the restrictor adjustment will do for us but I’m sure we’ll be stronger than we were at Road Atlanta.”
