Ingolstadt – Audi’s most compact model, the A1 unites all of the strengths of the brand – a progressive design, uncompromising quality and groundbreaking efficiency – in a space measuring 3.95 meters (12.96 ft) in length. The three-door compact is dynamic and luxurious, emotional and individual. Its powerful engines and the agile chassis make it the sportiest car in the segment. The readers of the magazine auto motor und sport have once again named the Audi A1 best-in-class in the voting for the Best Cars of 2013.

Body and interior
The encircling shoulder line immediately identifies the A1 as a member of the large Audi model family. The front end with the single-frame grille, the side line with the distinctive roof arch, the coupe-like C-pillars and the large wheel arches are among its defining style elements. The hood and the tailgate wrap around the body. Two-thirds of the body are made up of high- and ultra high-strength steels. The strongest of these are the hot-shaped steels, which are used primarily inside the occupant cell.

The interior of the Audi A1 is spacious and airy. The instrument panel is modeled to some extent on an airplane wing; its four round air vents are reminiscent of jet engines. The simple controls are every bit a classic Audi strength as is the superior workmanship. Many lovingly designed details underscore the premium character of the A1.

Powertrain
The engine lineup comprises seven four-cylinder units: four TFSI and three TDI engines. All of the engines follow the downsizing principle – they substitute forced induction for displacement and draw their fuel through direct injection units. Their performance range extends from 63 kW (86 hp) to 136 kW (185 hp). A supercharger and a turbocharger work together to provide the boost in the most powerful 1.4 TFSI engine.

Another high-tech engine is the 1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp). The cylinder on demand (COD) system deactivates two of the four cylinders when under part load.

This reduces average fuel consumption to 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers (50.05 US mpg), which corresponds to 109 grams of CO2 per kilometer (175.42 g/mile).

All variants offer impressive fuel economy. Standard cycle values lie between 3.8 and 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers (39.87 – 61.90 US mpg). Paired with a manual transmission, the 1.6 TDI emit just 99 grams CO2 per kilometer (159.33 g/mile), and the 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp) emits 119 grams (191.51 g/mile) when paired with S tronic. The start-stop-system is a standard efficiency component in all versions (except the 1.6 TDI with S tronic and the most powerful gasoline model).

Engine lineup:

  • 1.2 TFSI with 63 kW (86 hp)
  • 1.4 TFSI with 90 kW (122 hp)
  • 1.4 TFSI COD with 103 kW (140 hp)
  • 1.4 TFSI with 136 kW (185 hp)
  • 1.6 TDI with 66 kW (90 hp)
  • 1.6 TDI with 77 kW (105 hp)
  • 2.0 TDI with 105 kW (143 hp)

The seven-speed S tronic is available as an option with three engines and comes standard in the top-of-the-line version. The dual-clutch transmission shifts extremely quickly, comfortably and with no perceptible interruption to the flow of power. It can be operated as an automatic or manually, with paddles on the steering wheel available as an option.

Chassis
The wide chassis tuned for agility puts the A1 at the top of its class. Whether in the city, on an interurban road or on the expressway – the small compact is always great fun to drive thanks to its sporty setup, the favorable weight distribution and the direct-ratio steering. The setup is particularly sporty in the powerful top model.

Electronic stabilization control (ESC) with electronic limited slip differential, which comes standard on all models, makes the handling even more precise while also enhancing driving safety. It minimizes understeer at the cornering limit by means of slight braking interventions, which also improve traction.

Equipment
In addition to the Attraction and Ambition trim lines, Audi also offers packages focused on infotainment and interior design. Innovative materials and modern colors emphasize the youthful character of the A1. For each model, customers can also order a variety of kits and many other features after the initial sale to further customize their A1.

Audi combines exclusive special equipment from quattro GmbH and Audi Genuine Accessories in the sporty special edition models A1 amplified red, A1 amplified white and A1 amplified black. The special edition A1 admired offers young, first-time Audi customers an A1 with a particularly attractive look. The new competition kit R18 red plus (also available as gray plus) takes styling cues from the Audi R18 e-tron quattro Le Mans race car.

The infotainment systems offered for the Audi A1 come directly from the full-size class. The top of the line is MMI navigation plus, which sets the standard in the compact segment. The monitor folds out from the instrument panel, and the control unit uses MMI logic. Audi connect is the catchword for Internet services that the Bluetooth car phone online brings to the car; the integrated WLAN hotspot enables passengers to e-mail and surf freely.

Audi A1 Sportback
The Audi A1 Sportback is a few millimeters wider and taller than its three-door sister model and offers more rear headroom and easier access. The five-door model also boasts color styling all its own. The contrasting finish includes the entire roof and not just the roof arch.

Four TFSI and three TDI engines with outputs between 63 kW (86 hp) and 136 kW (185 hp) are available for the Audi A1 Sportback. The 1.4 TFSI with 103 kW (140 hp) features cylinder on demand technology, which shuts down two cylinders when under part load for groundbreaking efficiency.
