Big and Bad: A Faster Audi Q7 is Coming

Mercedes-Benz started manufacturing a high-performance AMG version of its ML-Class SUV way back in 1999. BMW followed suit with its X5 M (and X6 M) several years ago. Pretty soon, Audi will be getting in on that kind of action with its biggest rig, the Q7.

According to Top Gear, “Audi has confirmed … that a high performance version of the brand new Q7 … is in the works.” The publication is putting its money on that vehicle wearing an RS badge. Its source suggested a TDI engine (with fewer than 12 cylinders) could end up powering the sporty ute.

If the brand with the four rings goes with a gas power plant, TG believes the 560-horsepower twin-turbo V8 from the RS 7 (and RS 6) would be a great candidate, since it’s already certified for our market. We have to agree.

We can see Audi offering an RS Q7 with the choice of a gas or diesel engine in Europe. However, even though the regular U.S. Q7 is available with either type of power source, we think an RS version of it for the States would only be able to burn (lots of) gasoline.

Expect an RS Q7 to have a lower ride height, a tweaked suspension, modified steering, and Nürburgring-developed handling. What you should also expect? Plenty of comparisons to its corporate cousin, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
