TT 2001 check engine light and ESP light on

TT 2001 check engine light and ESP light on
I am trying to track down this issue: when I turn on the car, the check engine light is on, and so does the ESP light. If I push the ESP button, nothing happens.
If I stop the car and then I start it again (say, I stop for a coffee); then the ESP light goes off, although the engine light stay still on.
What could cause this? Should I buy a scanner to find out why the engine light is on, or Audi require a specific scanner to figure out what is going on?
