Default Yep, I am going IN! Timing belt replacement...

Just hitting 180,000 on my 1999 Audi A6 Avant 2.8. Heat is not great, so figure while I am doing the thermostat, might as well do the waterpump, and timing belt. Reading a TON of great writeups, and watching the youtube vids. Should be an interesting go. If anyone in the Colorado area (we are in Parker) has a Cam Tool to borrow, that would be awesome. Otherwise I might try to build one.

Wish me luck!

This would actually be a 30v engine not a 12v. That serpentine belt has seen better days for sure. I would strongly reccomend doing cam seals, valve cover gaskets, chain tensioner gaskets, and rear cam plugs also. Its soo much easier when the timing belt stuff is apart to do and they ALL leak. If you have even the slightest leak or stink nows the time to fix it.

2nd on everything Prospeeder has mentioned! also those cam chain tensioners are a common failure item on the 30v V6 and the 1.8T

Do NOT just put a valve cover gasket on it. Do the chain tensioner and rear cam plugs along with it since the cover must be off to repair them. If you just do a valve cover gasket alone your wasting your time and it will still leak and stink.

Sounds good. Will see what else I need to buy and get it ordered. The timing belt seems to have quite a bit of play in it.... is that normal??
