I've had this Stage 1 fix done to my car a while ago. It cut the consumption in half, I'd estimate. I doubt you're looking at anything less than ring replacement and possibly more with the rate you mention.

I don't notice any change in drive-ability following the flash. Some suggest they slightly de-tune the car. Not sure that's true.
It reduced engine vacuum under deceleration. I was noticeable to me, since now there's less compression braking, meaning I have to use the brakes a lot more.

They did stage 1 on my car. It helped, maybe jsut a little. I think consumption dropped by maybe 0.5l/1000, so it might fix the "low hanging fruit". Mine however even after the fix still burned jsut over 3l/1000mi.

Audi had me bring it back again and the dealer ran the test again (not sure if they did anything). It took them a little longer to hit the low mark. They probably drove more conservatively too. I think it's still around 2-2.5L/1000mi.

The decision now is whether to change piston/rings or the whole engine I think. For me at least.

I'm at 98k miles on a 2011.

Yup. IF I really accelerate hard from a light, you can see a cloud of oil smoke in the mirror and i swear the MMI drops a notch a bar afterwards.

at 20mpg, it's about a 60:1 ratio of gasoline to oil. Most 2 strokes are 50:1 mix, so it's pretty close to that.

It failed the consumption test again with the service guys driving it themselves about 350 miles (I had it overfilled slightly I think or consumption went down just a little).

Now they have some sort of test where i think they remove the plugs and inspect the top end. I would suspect they'd run a compression test too. My guess is that if the valve guides/seals are trashed and carbon buildup is severe. OR maybe gauging a certain level of cylinder wear. Not sure.

1 month ago the plan had been to replace the short block (whole engine block and bottom end, reassembled, but reuse heads I think). It was scheduled to start today. Then they came back and wanted more tests.

Lucky for us, the dealer we bought it from has given us a loaner to use the last 2 weeks and we'll keep it until the car is fixed. The dealer that sold us the car did a "full inspection" prior to sale according to Carfax report. Actually, it appears they did a CPO inspection, but it was not sold CPO. We felt they were either aware of the issue and should have sold the car for less or dumped it at auction, or their service department did a poor job with the inspection.

There were other things like not getting a full tank of fuel on delivery, not having the car washed or detailed. The low oil light came on within 10 miles of leaving the dealer lot, meaning it was already low on oil when we took delivery. All the tires were 3-4psi low too and it was almost out of washer fluid.

My family member took her A4 in today, and presumably got Stage 1 stuff done. Now she has to drive until the check engine light comes on -- and they said it must come on before 1,200 miles before they do anything else, and before it's given the 80,000 mile extended warranty.

Anyone know how much oil the CAEB engine has to lose before the light comes on? What fraction of a quart?

Low oil light comes on at around 0.8-1.2qt depending how much it was filled to start.

About 1500 miles since pistons and rings replaced and oil level was full on the MMI for the first 1200 of so, now it's showing 3/4. Lets hope that there's some initial break-in involved and it levels off. So while it's not severe, I'd anticipate still burning 1 qt after 3000 miles at this rate. Unfortunately that's well within limits, but IMO still bordering on "normal". But if it doesn't get worse, I can live with it.
