We are considering using this engine in a mid engine buggy project and were wondering which gearbox to use.
From doing a few searches it seems that the 012 five speed is the one. IIRC this is in the A4, and most importantly Quaiffe http://www.quaife.co.uk/shop/products/qdf6q make a diff for it.

Certianly if someone could confirm this or suggest a more suitable gearbox that would be great.

Just read the the self study guide that this engine will fit the:

Front-wheel drive Manual gearbox 01E (without oil cooling)
but also fits the
Quattro drive Manual gearbox 01E (without oil cooling
with the same code.

So I've found a very useful guide detailing which models had which boxes:

Looks like a gearbox out of a A4 1.8T will be the job.

Hey Stefen,

Did you ever get confirmation on which transmission to use? Also, with the AAN that you have/had in your buggy, what transmission did you use for it? Or did you just end up using the 01E?

Bump this one up again, ... is there a 2WD auto that will cope with this engine?

Manual can be done (should the 01E work?) but ideally auto would be best
