Default Motor swap

I was wondering if a 1996 2.8 a6 motor would fit in my 2001 2.7 a6 and if there is any modifications that would need to be done to get it in.

It will fit. All the components are near identical. The problem is all the other things you would have to change. How much are you willing to change?

Why......so you want to put the old poopy 12v in place of the bi turbo engine? It will physically fit but good luck making it run and having gauges, and the original 2.7 auto trans will not work.

It would only be a temporary swap until I rebuild the 2.7.tt.

First im assuming you are planning on the 30 valve 2.8 and not the 12v. You would need a new ecu, key, cluster, (all of which should come from the same car, or vag-com'd to match) a new wiring harness, possibly new maf, new throttle body and gas pedal depending on year, new latch carrier, redo the intake system, new front cross member, redo the exhaust, change or cap oil lines and coolant lines, and a bunch of other things I havnt thought of. You'd have to remove the intercooler and all the turbo piping.

If you plan on rebuilding buy a 2.7t, rebuild it, then swap it.
