Default Is 2001 S4 2.7 engine exactly same as 2001 A6 2.7?

Had a deposit on a 2001 S4 2.7 with APR Stage 2, piggies, ecs exhaust, tiptronic but the guy sold the car yesterday to someone that offered him $500 more and returned my deposit.
Last night I went to look at a 2001 A6 2.7, auto, that looks completely stock and it drove well, but lacked a lot of oomph that the modded S4 had.

I am wondering if I bought the A6, would I be able to flash the ECU, upgrade the exhaust, and do other things that a person might on an S4 without any difference? I guess I am asking if the 2.7L on the A6 is "detuned" in any way from the S4 that will limit me on what I can do to the engine to get back some of the grunt that the S4 had, that I liked. How about the transmission, they were both Automatic, but the S4 had the rocker switches on the stearing wheel, can those be added back, or is it a different tranny altogether? I noticed GIAC had a trans shifter computer flash to help the S4 get quicker shifts, can I do that flash to the A6 trans?

I realize I am dealing with a heavier car, but in someways I would feel better starting with a female owned sedan, than an enthusists S4 which was driven hard by an 18 year old kid for the past 6 months (he bought it from original owner in August of 2013).

If I will never get the kind of performance like I had in driving the S4, then I will keep looking for an S4, but if I can get 90% there (factoring in additional weight) with the A6 I will buy that and start building from there.

BTW-The A6 has 125K on it and timing belt and seals were done at 99K.

Yes and no. GIAC has a program for the transmission that speeds up the shifts dramatically. There are many, many ecu flash jobs out there for a jump to 300hp range on the A6 version of the 2.7. The S4 is lighter, yes. But like you said, that thing has been slammed harder than Jenna Jameson over the last 6 months. If i was 18 and had a chipped S4 i know how i would have been driving it.

Here's some info on the motor:

I expect a full report no later than mid March…… Ok, July.

Get the A6, do the T belt as soon as you do. 26k miles on it since last one, but start fresh and get some piece of mind and some knowledge on your car. Especially on how spend it is unless you DIY!

Drivetrain wise theres almost no difference. The Auto trans is the exact same EMP option code S4 and A6 2.7 share. The Engines are the same code. Differentials are even the same from what I gathered. So as far as tuning it should have just as much capability as an S4
