Default Do I need a new MAF?

'98 A4 2.8 30v 220K miles
Been dealing with a few problems when the engine is up to temp (always runs perfect when cold). These are intermittent does not happen very often.
At an idle (long stop light or delay) it will suddenly want to die .... like a large vacuum leak.
Upon accelerating gently it will cut out totally for just a split second just like the ignition was turned off, then it cuts back in and will run fine.
The codes that show up most of the time are P0102, P1129, P1127, P1141.
I changed the plugs, checked the N70, cleaned N90, and checked everything for vacuum leaks.
On Monday it cut out several times while accelerating onto the freeway. I got mad, pulled over, disconnected the MAF wiring harness and it has been running perfect for 4 days now.
Now does this prove that the MAF is bad?
These things aren't cheep ~$170 for the Hitachi unit that I have (078 133 471c) I hate to throw parts (expensive) at the car. Is the OEM unit the way to go? Any luck with aftermarket?
I have yet been able to get a log of the MAF reading when it does cut out. I get readings of 2.92~3.33 at idle and goes up to the 40~50 range under gentle acceleration to ~2800rpm when the car is running correctly.
