Anyone of you that have or had this issue in the past or the notorious transmission problem please file with NHTSA under defects all you need is you VIN# and a few minutes to do so.
THE bad lifter / tensioner clicking noise tapping from passenger side back cylinder that so many of us deal with, lets get it taken care of and recalled
even if audi paid for it under warranty still make it known to NHTSA. The more people that file the better. Make audi take care of this costly repair. Thank You

2005 4.2 200k. I bought my car from an audi engineer and while I was purchasing the car,* he told me to use 10.5 quarts of oil. And I did so everytime, until recently I read the manual and is says it required 9.5. And because I was cheap I figured the Audi engineer made a mistake when he told me how much oil to use but then the noise came and and never went away and I'm trying everything but nothing is working. I did notice that the new models of the 4.2 required 10.5 quarts of oil. Maybe when they first designed the 4.2 and 1998 they made a mistake. I'm an engineer a mechanical engineer and I believe mistakes are made some time. So basically just try using more oil hopefully you did not mess up a lifter like I did because my car has never made that noise up until I only use 9.5 quarts of oil and even when I added more oil the sound still hasn't gone away. The previous owner also told me that when you start hearing a little clattering noise when you start the engine that you need to add more oil he said you're not supposed to hear that noise at all when you start your engine not even for a little bit.
