Default Thinking of buying 2003 to 2007 A8 with 4.2

Hello and good day everyone.
I am really keen on the V8 4.2L A8. I am looking for one from 2003 to 2007.
I have heard many nightmarish stories about the timing chains on the back of the engine. The problems they cause. The expense to correct the problem. I've heard upwards of $5000.00 as the entire engine has to be removed.

Is it a rare problems that is blown out of proportion or is this to be expected with every 4.2 out there. What can be done so this problem does not occur?

I heard this same problem plagues the 5.2 V10 as well. I really like to get another Audi but this design flaw as I've heard it called, is very worrysome.

Any thoughts, feedback on why or why not to purchase an A* 4.2 would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone and have a great day.
Simon

I bought a 3.2, to avoid that issue.

If I were doing it again, I'd shop for a 4.2 with low VCDS readings on the can offsets. If I found one with low reading(>5, total, on each bank).

Chances are that's an engine that's going to last.

You'd probably have to take it to a VG independent shop to get it checked out, but you're going to need a good reputable shop anyway.

I "shopped" for the right indy, for me, even before I bought an A6.

You'll have better luck with this in the A8 D3 section but the answer to your question is that chain problems in A8's are not very common. If you're in the US you don't have any other option as the A8 didn't ship with any other engines. If you poke around on the forum here you'll find many failures on other models reported. But only 1 on an A8. My personal opinion is that A8 owners tended to treat their cars a little better and maintained them better. Also the 2004-2006 cars have the older timing belt motor (what I have). The trade off is that a timing service is only $1800 but it will have to be done about every 75k miles. Also lest power and economy when compared to the FSI motor. If I had found a 2007 in my price range I would have bought it.
