total noob question....
tried to search the forum but there's no filter for this forum.
what's life like with a 4.2? does it last? anyone here with serious miles (300,000kms type of serious mileage) i'm sure it drinks a "bit" more than a toyta echo, but would you say it's excessive?
thanks!

I've had mine for almost 3 months and love every second of it.
This is our first German car and it was love at first drive. We've always liked the Audi design, but couldn't justify the price tag. When we were replacing our stolen "pleasure car", an Integra, we came across this beauty. It is 2000 and had 70k miles. The dealer was very helpful throughout the whole transcation and got us an extended warranty. Ironically, the Audi was not considered a "luxury" brand by the warranty company so we saved about $400.
As most AWers would attest, you'll find that the V8 is one of the more reliable Audi engines. It's truly a gem. While you won't out-accelerate some 2.7Ts or Lexus IS300s, it's a real beast on the highway. I'm currently averaging about 17/21mpg on city/highway. Important thing is have the dealer or a competent indy replace the timing belt and related components no later than 75k miles.
Good luck and have fun!

I've got a '97 A8Q with the 4.2L 118K miles and counting, get 20mpg in town and around 25hwy..
I dont do much serious in town driving as it drives me nuts, and on my last road trip I got 27mpg, the two kegs of beer in the back must have helped or something.
Also I spend time in CO and AL, it you live anywhere near sea level, say less than 1 or 2 thousand feet, the engine is great, after you get up in elevation, 5K and then in the mountains 8-10K feet, its not so impressive anymore. Thats turbo teritory.

A8L 01 for 118,000
I had an 01 A8L that started falling apart on me (mostly minor stuff like a/c) but I never had problems with the engine. I drove that thing hard too. I finally sold it for a 2006 A6 4.2. I liked the engine enough to stick with it.
