Default transmission solenoid fault, dealer say $9200

2006 A8 with 150000 miles, transmission fault, won't move forward or back. towed to independent repair, said can't do anything, dealer said solenoid fault can't fix, new transmission $9200? Anyone have similiar issues. Can solenoids be accessed without r&r?

Chances are they are really just guessing at the problem and know replacing the transmission will fix it. If the car wont move at all forwards or backwards. The transmission is junk. You could unplug the wiring harness from the transmission and still have limp mode 4th forward and reverse. So no solenoid would fix it. I would just grab up a used transmission and have it installed. Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market see if any wreckers near you have a lower mileage one and have a shop install it.

Have fun with that boring turd. Buying a Toyota or Honda is not a guarantee of a trouble free car. I have seen plenty of 80-90k toyotas with junk engines, nickle and dime people to death, hondas with terrible oil burning issues, head gaskets, transmission issues ect. Its a car, you wont be escaping repairs and failures.

Do not buy a used transmission, that is horrible advice. Buying a used transmission is a crap shoot, and you still have to use your mechatronics, and if your mechatronics is the problem, well guess what, you still have the same problem...I believe it should have the ZF 6hp26A trans in it, so There is an 80% chance that the mechatronics is the problem... I do, however, agree with prospeeder about trying to disconnect the harness going into the trans to see if it will give you 4th and reverse LM.

Find a reputable shop to take it to, that KNOWS transmissions. I would say that posting the codes would be the best thing to share with us, because maybe someone on here can help. Dealers always recommend changing the whole transmissions, because it takes the liability from their side of the street. I could help if you live in NC.

I have a lot of zf 6 speeds come in with no gears, and it is usually a line pressure issues, and the computer wont allow solenoids to engage gears due to underpressure.

Just use a VAG-COM to get us a list of codes to see if we can help.

This is the first thing I look for as a problem when diagnosing this condition you have:

Oil sleeve, and rubber tube seals from valve body to case...
Your quote from the dealer can turn into a few hundred dollar repair if you take ti to the right shop. These things are common failure items on this trans, and are a MUST CHANGE item when I do a trans service.

Those few seals, new genuine ZF trans pan, and fluid shouldn't run you more than about $1000 by a reputable shop.
