Default Gear Whine

Just curious. I've noticed since I bought my new allroad that there seems to be some type of gear whine at speeds between 40 and 45 mph. It's similar to what one use to hear in some manual transmissions. It changes pitch a bit whether accelerating or decelerating. I'm thinking it might be the differential, as it seems to be coming from the rear. It's loud enough that on quiet pavement, that it can be heard with the radio on. It's not crazy loud, but it can be heard. I put the car on cruise in the "whining" zone, and started manually shifting the transmission and the sound didn't change, ruling out the transmission I would believe. Anyway, she's going to the dealer for a ride along so that I can point it out. When I explained a few weeks ago what I was hearing, one of the techs said that the gear noise could be normal, but they would have to hear it to be sure.

The dealer thinks it's just tire hum. It was suggested to play around with the tire pressure and see what happens to the noise.
