Tire size for 2014 A4 Allroad
Hi everyone. I posted this in the wrong place at first so here we go again
I am new to the forum and thought i'd ask all of you this question:
I'm currently running a set of 245/45-18 winter Dunlop tires. I have received an offer for a set of Nokian (better suitable for Nordic winter) studless tires in 245/50-18. Any thoughts or experiance on the different size? I think perhaps it would give a softer feel/smoother ride but it may be hard to notice?
Thanks

I actually run 245x40x18 Michelin Alpins in Winter as they were a hand-me-down from my prior A5. A bit wider footprint and about one half inch lower stance but not noticeable.
Note however that for deep snow driving you really want narrower tires so you don't 'snowplow' as much. So imho you're better off with what you currently have. Dunlop are good tires.
I've had the privilege of driving in your beautiful country in Winter so write with some experience.

The 17's with the taller sidewall offer a smoother ride. Unless I'm driving full-tilt, I don't notice any diminished handling.

I will second Roger_1's point. I run Continental Extreme Winter Contact 225/55 R17s and it helps in smoothing out the sharp bumps from ice ruts and pot holes. With all the ice on the roads my only handling priorities are steering where I want to go and stopping when I want to stop.

Living in a warm weather state, I don't have an insight into winter tires. However, I did find this website useful when I upgraded my wheels and tires earlier this year: http://www.willtheyfit.com
Changing your wheel/tire combo from 245/45 to 245/50 will change your wheel diameter, which will introduce an error in your speedometer. This website helps you determine how much the difference is, and may also help you in choosing a different combination that minimizes the error.
