Question Used ARs: How-to look for cam follower issues, PCV/divertr or carbon buildup?

Hi,

Planning to look for a used AR (>2013) with the 4 cyl TFSI 2.0 engines.

Also been reading on various forums about the TFSI 2.0 engine issues which boils down to the cam follower design, PCV/diverter and carbon sludge buildup on the valves. I hope I read all this correctly and didn't misunderstand the common issues.

Is there a method to look for, and come to a reasonable suspicion that the used AR may potentially have these issues?

Thanks in advance for any advice. If there are more things to look out for in a used AR, pls let me know.

I'm not sure those apply to the gen2 2.0T engine, or at least, as much as they did with the 05-08 2.0TFSI. I think the biggest issue the newer engines deal with is oil consumption, and the timing chain tensioner can go bad..

No, engine issues, and particularly oil consumption (pistons) were cleared up with the B8.5, post 2012.

If you're looking at a B8 Avant, probs were centered on MY 2011. So, allroad >2013, you should be fine. Mine came from a woman owner, light footed on reg gas and 10k dealer oil changes at 47k. Almost nill consumption after 1200 miles. Gauge was dead center, I finally topped it off.

Thanks. Hmm, I just read your story picking up your car for the lady with many Audis! Congrats! ;-P ... I wonder if she hangs out here reading on the forums! haha!

So, what is exactly a B8.5 post 2012 model?

Is there an easy way to tell by the build date cut-off - you indicated any AR's with a build date sticker with date 2013 and up?

Do you mind sharing what is your engine code number?

Is your oil filler cap in the center or at the corner left side (when looking at the engine directly from the the front) ?

Sorry for all the questions!

I just had my 2013 AR checked for any carbon buildup and it came back clean as a whistle (as these things go).

I attribute it to using Chevron Techron and BG44K Fuel System Cleaner every 10k miles.

My AR has 76k miles on the clock.

The Cam Follower was done away with in 2009, as well as the timing belt. There is now a roller setup that doesn't have the wear issue, and a timing chain. Also, If you go to the yearly Consumer Guide publication from Consumer Reports, the 2013 Allroad got really good marks for reliability. Consumer Reports gives cars one of five ratings, and the 2013 Allroad got the top rating. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough data yet for the 2014, and 2015's to make a judgement on those model years.
