Default 1997 A4 Instrument Cluster Issues

Hello.
I have a 1997 Audi a4 with the 2.8 12v engine, auto tranny. When I purchased it, the instrument cluster was not working. The speedo, tach, gas gauge, and temp gauge are not working. I was able to get a reading from my scanner of the tach and speedo so I know that they are working properly but they are not getting to the instrument cluster. The lcd display is not working either and none of the "pretty" lights are working. The idiot lights and such are working fine, to my knowledge, as well as the voltage and oil temp gauges.
If anyone has any idea of what the problem may be, please let me know.
Want to get this fixed so any help would be awesome.
Thank you

Cheers

Are you using VAG.com or a generic scanner .

VAG.com has a test to check the gauges, the needles will actually move.

Make sure you have the correct cluster, since you purchased the car with the cluster not working it's possible that someone has installed a newer one that is not compatible with that VIN.

Lot's of incompatibilities between 96-99 clusters.
