Default 2.8L 30 Valve Cam Chain Tensioners

Does anyone know if the chain tensioners are common wear parts? Can you replace them from the topside? Is there a way to diagnose a bad one? I have alot of noise that to me sounds like 'chain slap' sounds similar to to when a chainsaw chain is too loose.

the most effective way to make sure you need chain guide replacements is by simply removing your valve covers, damage will be visible immediately.

replacing them requires to do a total timing belt job on the car.

They are not common wear parts, but when the plastic guides break, they made a fair amount of noise.

Take a look, but be advised that the lower guide is hard to see without removing the adjuster.
