I bought a 1996 Audi A4 Quattro with the 2.8L engine as a daily commuter car last year. It's due for inspection this month and of course the CEL light started coming on. The only code thrown is the P1504 Intake air leak.


If I clear the code and drive the car, it does not come back until I stop and sit at an idle for a few minutes (stop light, drive through, ect.) I can notice a slight audible change when the CEL comes on, the idle gets a little bit rougher, but doesn't quit.


I've done a visual inspection of the intake lines. One thing I did notice is that the plastic valve covers are cracked. Surely, the plastic is just a cosmetic cover? Anyway, this just started a week ago and I've got to get it inspected (in Mass.) this week. So, any previous experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated!
