Default A4 Vs. A6

I need your advice. I am considering a purchase of a car and want to know what you guys would do. I am debating between a 2003 A4 1.8 with sport package and premium package or a 2000 A6 4.2 with sport package, nav system with 48K mile on it. The A4 has a 100K warranty and only has 700 miles on it and also includes maintenace up to 50K. The selling price is the same on both cars, and is where I can afford both. I am 6'1" tall and am concerned about the size of the A4 but I am more concerned about the repair costs on the 4.2 over time. Give me your thoughts please.

Default Re: have you driven the A4?

i have driven both cars and love both for different reasons. I posted the same message on the A6 forum, I guess I am looking for reports on 4.2 repair issues more than anything. I want the larger 4.2 over the A4 but all the warranty and new body style of the A4 (love it) are very appealing to me. Also, worried about owning an A6 with an old body style in about 14 months.

Default I would take the 4.2, but if you chose the 4.2 you have to realize it has some miles on the clock.

And repairs can get expensive in a couple years. If you want the piece of mind of having a great warrenty for the distant future, take the A4. If you arent worried about paying for repairs in the distant future, take the A6.

Default sounds like your not REAL comfortable in the A4

I personally can't stand the A6 bodystyle its far too round. the A4 has a much more agressive look to it. Don't get me wrong though they are both Audis though. When I first stepped into an A4 for the first time it blew me away. Interior is primary concern for me since i see it all the time and it's pure gravy to look at it from the outside and love it.

Default I'm 6'1" as well and I'd get the 4.2 hands down.

I drive a 2.8 A4 and here are my reasons for choosing the 4.2:

1) No leg room in the back seats. Every now and then you may have more than 2 people in the car. (Wouldn't suggest making a habit of it though)

2) No mods to be done to the 4.2. You've got plenty of power and you'll need it for your size. The 1.8 will have to have mods to be exciting to drive and the mods may void your warranty or stress the engine.
The money you'd spend on mods can be saved for future maintence of the 4.2. You can't get around spending cash on any Audi.

3) The 4.2 Just looks better with the wheels, wheel wells, it's just nicer. Not like a regular 4.2. Very agressive looking. And they're rare (at least around here).

Those are my reasons but do what you feel comfortable with.

Default Re: A4 Vs. A6

I am 6'1" and I have driven both cars. I currently own an A4 so I am a little biased but I have not found any trouble with the size. I have fit 4 guys all around or above 6' with little comfort issues. If you want extra size the obvious answer is the A6( I like 2.7t as an engine my, $.02). One thing to think about is what you will be using this car for. I purchesaed my A4 because I wanted a car that I could chpi, tune etc.. and be my car that I go to work in.

Default If the A6 doesn't come with an Assured warranty, make sure you factor maintainance...

in to the equation. I'm in that situation. I can afford the payments on my A4 but will have to sell it once the Audi Assured warranty expires because I can't afford $2000-$5000 per year in non-routine maintainance that is required. Add that to the routine maintainance and the monthly payments and you've got one expensive car (A BMW would have worked out much cheaper for me even though it had a higher selling price). According to consumer reports, A6s are even less reliable than A4s.
