Default 2.8 Timing belt scraping block-side guard?

Hey Y'all- just finished (?) a tbelt job on my '01 2.8 Quattro and all was fine until I hit 3K rpm on the 'rev-up' after coolant flush and starting hearing a scraping...quickly shut down and determined it was the driver's side t-belt guard being scraped by the cam sprocket and t-belt. After removal and inspection, scraping was confirmed by scoring on black metal t-belt guard? Anyone every had/heard of this before? Going to replace guard tomorrow and see if that fixes it but seems like very little clearance on the driver's side comparted to the pass' side? Is that normal?
