Default Audi A4 B5 torque converter going?

okay im trying to figure if its the transmission or the torque converter

i have a 01 audi a4 1.8t quattro
around 150k

i just got it i was told it was transmission issues wasnt sure how bad but i have some reason to suspect its the toque converter (since im used to standards i thought it was the clutch but same difference if im not mistaken)

reverse it seems like it takes a second or two longer to go but it goes fine and all the other gears went fine i drove it around for about a week before...

it started to feel skipping not so much slipping but as it was turning it seems to grind in a little over and over again. the gears shift fine

im trying to figure if there is any way to figure if its that and not the whole transmission i dont mind if i have to replace it but why replace it if it doesnt need to be replaced

transmission code is FEL or something i know it had an F and im pretty sure an L there ARE two different codes for my car
