Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 - any reason to choose one over the other?
#2
Subjective observations...
I ran both over a 4 year period in my '96 Outback:
Syntec felt like it "needed to be changed" after about 6k miles, Mobil 1 never felt like that. I have owned 2 cars that seemed to increase the metallic noises as the oil aged, a 73 Fiat 124 Spyder and the Outback.
Syntec seemed to leave more of a dark amber film deposit on engine surfaces than Mobil 1.
Mobil 1 was continually consumed - a quart or so over 6k miles, where the Syntec never required topping up.
I have used both in an '89 F250 with a 351CID V8. The Mobil 1 leaks from every gasket and seal, the Syntec doesnt. My wifes GSX has used both and I cannot tell any diffrence between them.
Overall I prefer the Mobil 1 if the engine doesnt leak it out.<p>2001 A4 1.8TQMS

I don't think it really matters.....
I think the answers you will get is just what people prefer. You may even get a little war started on which oil is better.
I think both are good oils, and it doesn't really matter which one you choose. Most of the people on this board use Mobil1. I've been using Castrol Syntec in my past 5 cars, some turbo, some supercharged, some normal aspirated.
I like the 5W-50 weight oil, and Mobil1 doesn't sell a weight like that to my knowledge.
