Default Clicking noise in engine

I have an automatic 2005. I hear a clicking noise only the first time I accelerate every time I drive. Even if I come to a stop and drive again it's not there. It sounds like it's coming from the engine and I have no idea what it is. It happens with a slow or fast acceleration. Any ideas at all? It's about 5 or 6 fast clicks. Thanks

Your 2005 is not a B5 chassis. It is either a B6 or B7.
You also don't state which engine you have.

However, does it go away if you give the engine some revs first (say 1500-2000rpm for about 10 secs) before then accelerating?
With variable cam timing engines, the cam chain adjusters can wear and require good oil pessure to tension them. This can show as a rattling or clicking noise at cold start until they fill with oil.
Worn hydraulic lifters can also click until they fully pressurise.
Both can produce a very similar sound and require a good ear to locate where the noise is coming from. However, both would also normally just rattle for a few seconds after cold start and smooth out during idle before driving anywhere.

Also I don't know about cars so I just guessed the forum. Are either of those expensive?

Also, last question, is it something I need to get fixed ASAP?

It really depends what it is - I'm just guessing.
If you don't know about cars, I would find a good independant german car specialist in your area (don't go to a regular mechanic - chances are they know nothing about your Audi), take it there and at least have it diagnosed.

Depending how bad the rattle is is how urgent the job is.

Both jobs aren't particularly cheap, as they both require camshaft removal to fix.
Hydraulic lifters themselves are cheap, so the only real expense is labour.
The Camshaft tensioners can be pricey, though aftermarket alternatives do exist which do reduce the price (but still not 'cheap').

However, you may have a different problem altogether. So it's important to at least find out for sure what is wrong, then get an estimate and start putting some money aside!

Cheers

I get a similar 5-10 'clicks' on initial getaway when the engine and lubes are cold. I head up a slight hill leaving the homestead, exacerbating the effect. Pretty sure it's in the front drive..probably CV joints in the front drive shafts. Assuming you have a quattro (have to assume since you haven't provided any details), it might be a good idea to inspect the condition of the front halfshaft boots. Then tend to fail/leak on the B5 and I suspect they didn't improve the design much by 2005. Once the grease is gone, their lifetime is quickly reduced. Check both the inside and outside boots. They both fail. Repair kits are available.

I also get the 'tensioner rattle' at cold start. It lasts a couple seconds until the oil pressure builds. It sounds awful but has been doing it for 100k miles. I inspected the tensioners when replacing the seals a couple years back and they looked fine. Not gonna chase it.

Get us some more details on your rig even if you are in the wrong forum.
