Guys I need help! Just busted my PS cooler and can't get a new one. Need to move car!
Went up in neighbors driveway and unfortunately busted the power steering cooler. You know that long U shaped metal tube that sits in front of the radiator. It's high pressure so pretty much lost all my PS fluid. Anyway I'm in an apartment on a busy Seattle street and have to move the car by Sunday night because they're starting roadwork and have no-parking signs up now effective Monday. I've been checking local autoparts stores and nobody seems to have the exact fit for the cooler. So does anyone think I could get away with temporarily hacking it out and putting some other tube on? Just for a few days until the correct part gets in. Also in generic PS fine if it's just for a few days? I don't have the money to waste a whole bottle if my ghetto fix doesn't go through. If you guys think tubing will work, do you know what size I should aim for? I can't find a diy

Well, if you know that you have to replace the part you already have tubing of the correct size. Just use a pipe cutter to cut out a section, and connect the two tubes together. You will not want to use the car hard in this configuration, but it will certainly let you move the car.

By the by I forgot the second part; do not use generic fluid, get the right (mineral oil) stuff. You will hate yourself if you put the wrong stuff in as the seals will fail. You will also not loose a lot of it provided the car is off when you put the new part on.

Okay. I was going to put generic stuff in it but then immediately swap out a few days later when I have more time and the correct part, do you think I shouldn't?

Don't do it, I have seen the seals fail almost right away. Flushing it out is also a pain. There are other brands besides the Pentosin, just make sure that Audi is listed on it.

I wouldn't splice anything into the pressure side of the power steering. If it was the return side that would be one thing but the pressure side has hydraulic fittings for a reason. the power steering system is under a lot of pressure and a typical fitting such as a hose clamp would just blow off, even with a barbed fitting. Good luck, i hope everything works out for you.
