HELP!!! 2nd gear, can't engage when cold
#2
You can't engage second at all in cold? or just grinds/notchy?
Welcome to VAG's most common tranny deficiency, though it seems like you have it bad. Have the synchros replaced, if you can't engage it at all that is not good. Usually in the cold 2nd is hard to engage and will grind a bit, but it always goes in. Every VW and Audi I have ever driven had the cold 2nd gear notchiness/grind.

Sorry, it will go in but very hard to engage. Do you have a price on the synchros? Will it damage the trans to run it without new synchros?

I always start my car then row gently 1-5; then 5-1...
then when driving away from a cold start, i pause for a second or two between the 1-2 shift. Car is definitely clunky when cold doing the 1-2...but warms up quickly.

When it is cold out, it helps a lot to blip the throttle between the 1-2 shift.
I ususally will do this during the winter, where the fluid is not very viscous and the increase in rev's helps slide the gears in place.
