...and all I see on this board is people claiming that a C-clamp with a turning motion will screw it back in. That's horse **** -- I can see it maybe if your pads are newer.
I've noticed that Lysle makes a "Rear Brake Piston Tool", which is essentially a cube-shaped tool with a 3/8" rachet extension on each side, each side containing 2 circles that should fit the holes in the piston to rotate it back in, spaced differently for different applications.
Lysle says "this works on all domestics and some imports". Do B5 A4's fall into the "some imports" category? I'm _this close_ to setting my rear brake caliper ablaze in frustration.

The Cube is better, but only slightly, and ...
you need to grind off two of the four nubs on one face to get it to fit. You're much better off with the $40 Harbor Freight Tool.

You're right, though; this is the pits.

i have a harbor freight in my town now, but 5 months ago...
and at 2am, i didn't . i had used a c-clamp for my fronts a month prior to that and thought i could for the rears too. wrong. well, that late at night, and literally 1/2 way through the job, i wasn't putting it back together...what i did was use the c-clamp kind of 'seat' the piston into the threads, then i used needlenose and turned the piston x amount of times, then time for c-clamp again, then needlenose, etc. whole job took like 3 hours. argh! i'm definitely getting the HF set for next time.
