High RPM while driving?
Hello every one, I was wondering if anyone new what the normal rpm would be for a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 Quatro Manual, going 60 Miles, the reason I ask is becouse I test drove a car and while on the highway going 60 miles, the Rpm was reading at 2800rpm, so I increased the speed to 80 miles and the RPM stayed at about 3400rpm, the car didnt shake or make any noises whatsoever and drove perfectly, it just seems to me that is quite a bit high for those speeds
thanks

I asked this question before and it is so....um.....broad I suppose.
I recently did a TB job and my RPMs went down make sense? not to me.
I was doing about 2700 at 65mph before TB job and now doing about 2400. Next job on the list to do a tranny flush and filter replace. Lets see what that does.

Nope, 98 with 112,000 2.8 manual reads the same as yours. 6200 is the redline so you have a way to go. The engine is loping along at 2800, when your in 2nd or 3rd at that rpm it is begging for you to stab the throttle, that is when the fun begins. So the engine is not turning any faster at 20 MPH or 60 MPH depending on what gear your in..Heck I have a 350 v8 chevy that redlines at 4 grand. The weight of the engine for a v6 vs 1.8 is minimal, put one fat person in the car and it would be equal to a thin driver in a 1.8. TB would not cause that big of a RPM difference unless the belt was so stretched that the timing was off.Auto vs standard is not apples to apples, different gearing.

If the timing belt job is related to the change, it is because something was inadvertently changed during the belt job.

3400 at 80 mph for a 2.8 manual quattro is correct.
Here is a link that shows the rpm/mph for the 2.8 gearing with 225/45/17 tires.
The gearing is always going to be set so a smaller displacement engine is going to be running at higher rpms and this is because it makes more tq/hp at higher rpms. This is why big displacement V8's run at such low rpms, because they make more power at those lower rpms then a V6 and I4. IF you were to put a transmission with a 5th gear that was running 2500 rpms at 80mph you would have to use way more throttle to keep it at that speed and this means burning more fuel. For a 1.8t it would mean being closer to boost which will cause it to get lower MPG.

I own a 1999 Audi A4 1.8t Automatic and for me when im going 60 miles the rpm is around 2400, its not until i get to around 80 miles does it reach about 3100 rpm, When I asked some friends they told me that the reason the rpm was higher was becouse it the car was a V6 and had to work harder to mover becouse of the engine wieght, I know its going to be heavier but to me, it just seems that the engine should have a good amount of power more and thus lower RPM"S
