Forgot to mention that the heater core hoses were both hot, one was notably hotter than the other. I think it was the right hand hose, if you are standing in front of the vehicle and looking into the hood, that was the hotter hose.

OK, it seems that your heater core is OK. Try the VAG tool and scan for the HVAC module only - it may take several tries before it will connect, but eventually it should (assuming that the other modules can connect). You don't need the "complete scan of all modules", just scan the HVAC for this problem.

More info.....it seems as though I am actually getting a range of temperature degrees. I was driving home and put the heater control onto the coldest setting and of course it blew icy cold air conditioned air. Then I changed it up to the hottest setting, and the temperature got warmer, and settled on a very luke warm, almost a touch of cool. But a temperature change nonetheless.

When I got home I shut the heater controls off completely, and idled the car. The I turned it back on to full heat, and it came out much warmer than before but then started to cool off to the luke warm temperature.

Thoughts?

Well, it's not my car but the combinaion of:
1. I flushed the heater core. Not sure how much water pressure to use, so I played it safe with a very light flow out of the garden hose.
It ran clear out the other end after about a half a litre came through. It was pink to start out. The resovoir is also pink in color.
2, One heater hose was hotter than the other but they were both hot

These lead me to believe that the heater core is OK. It's simple to run a VAG-COM scan; please run one already for the HVAC control unit.

well, it turns out that the heater core was bad.
Took it to a local garage, and 230 bucks for a heater core and 8 hours labor later, and I have heat.

nice way to spend 1100 bucks.
