Default My Dealer invited me to test out a new CVT...

2002 A4 1.8T Tip with CVT with Sport Package

<IMG SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25067/02-a4-cvt.jpg">

Overall impressions .... I like it. I would be happy with it on a car with Quattro

In traffic you hardly notice that it's different other than the fact that you don't have the auto sometimes shifting up and down to find the right gear.

Merging onto the highway is where you really hear and feel the difference. There was no lack for power or pick up and I think if you have the music turned up you'd never know.

I'm looking forward to hear in the long-term how folks like this and how it holds up. As far as the rest of the car goes. the 02 is starting to grow on me especially as I see the potential for styling modifications. In the interior I think there was just about as many things they changed that I liked as I didn't like. Here's just a few...

Likes:
* more adjustment in all directions on the steering wheel
* height adjuster on the seat
* hidden compartment under the front seats (very cool)
* little "pockets" under arm rest are deeper and little more usable
* three-flash lane change signal
* larger more accessible ashtray (change drawer for us non-smokers)

Didn't Likes:
* two left stalks on the steering column are not lined up, had to check several times that something wasn't on or flashing.
* dial light for the headlights
* mirror adjusters is now adjusted with the mirror selector as a joystick
* "Credit Card" drawer on the dash (similar to the cup holder), not sure what I would use it for

Overall, there weren't enough dislikes to make me not get the car, but I'll still wait and see what the new gen S4 will be like.

Default Don't know how they do it but...

... feels very much like my 01 Tip. Biggest difference is that the 02 Tip is 6-speed. Didn't get too much hiway travel to get it up through all the gear to get a real good feel for it.

Did it seem bigger inside? Shoulder room? Were the seats any better (lumbar support/curvature?)

Default CVT has 6 preset ratio for people who want to "shift" themselves.

The transmission is CVT. So in tip mode the car behaves like a 6-speed auto.

Default Yes, the seats do feel a little nicer ...

Wasn't a huge difference, I had to stop and think about if it felt that much different than mine (since it was a nice day I drove my old MGB to the dealer, so it's not as if I got out of one into the other.)

Couldn't say specificly if the shoulder room was better. I'm 5'11, 225 lbs and felt very comfortable.

I figure it's not that much different than the 01 since it;s all done by computer

Default CVT is a completely new transmission. It has no torque converters and it uses chains and gears to..

change the ratio of the transmission. So the car could stay at peak performance/efficiency. It's a completely different system than the 2001 Tip.

Default Sorry, what I meant was...

... the way they go about making the manual shift part of the Tip work. I know the tranny as a whole is all new.
