Please help, 2.8 won't start.
I have a 2000 A4 2.8 Quattro. Yesterday I went to take a trip got out of the driveway, stepped on the gas and it had no power at all. I shut it down and tried to restart and it will not start. It cranks and has spark. A friend of mine looked at for a second and told me it was the fuel pump. So I bought a fuel pump installed it to find out that the original still worked was pumping during crank. I don't know what to do, has anyone had a problem with mysterious malfunctions of just not starting? Could my fuel filter be so dirty that there is no fuel getting to the engine?

Has any work recently been done to the engine such as a timing belt replacement?

Thank you for the replies, especially 4driver4. The timing belt hasn't been replaced that I know of. Bought in august last year with 131k now has 152k. I don't believe my mechanic inspected the timing chain or tensioners. And yes it is a 5 valve. Seems unlikely both sensors would fail at the same time that's why I suspect something greater. I've read a faulty crankshaft sensor could cause these codes but I wanted to know if anyone else went there the same issue and discovered the problem.

Since you have no record of it being done, your mechanic should most likely begin with replacing the timing belt and associated parts after checking the valve timing and chain tensioners.

On the cam sensors, check the "red/blk" wire for power with ignition on. Should have constant 12. If not check wiring, then fuses for ECU power, then continue on to replacing the ecu.

I would check the ECU relay before replacing the ECU. I have a 1.8t and just had to replace that $19 relay because my car wouldn't start on random occasions. If you have spark and fuel pressure, this could be your problem too.
