Default Starter connections - not cranking

Solenoid clicks, but starter not turning.
Took it out.

The solenoid clicks when 12V applied (to connector "50", where grey push on connector goes).

The starter turns when 12V applied to the shorter of the 2 large bolts, but NOT when applied to the long one where the 2 thick wires are bolted to.

Nothing connected to the pin left of "15A".

Is there an internal 'fuse' between the long/big and short/big nut?

What can be checked on the starter?

Since solenoid clicks and motor run: can it be fixed?

Check to serif your getting voltage at the fat wire. If not you found where to begin.

Will do. But even if 12V is on the fat wire, starter will not turn; that is what I tested (putting 12V to the large bolt = not running, 12V to bolt next to it: running).

How to explain that?

How does the 'internal' wiring look like?
How is 'fat wire'(long bolt) connected to short bolt (which apparently has a lead going into the motor, visible in photo?)

Starts to look like a bad solenoid: "The ignition switch provides the trigger signal to activate the starter solenoid (works). The solenoid then takes over to provide bower through the internal contacts of the solenoid (does NOT happen)."

I may try (need to move the car) to just put the starter back in temporarily, ignition in key-on position and then use a battery pack and apply 12V to the 'short' not (directly powering the starter motor, bypassing the solenoid) and the 'kick out' pin (to engage the gear).

Does anyone know if the solenoid is available at local parts stores?

I doubt if you can buy just the internal solenoid . Open it up maybe one of the contacts fell off.

You can buy the whole solenoid (ebay shows some). held by 3 philips screws.

Found used starter at local JY. Checked out ok, installed. Car runs.

I have 99 A4 quatro and my starter has the same two connections but mine was connected to the 15a and worked fine. Now it does not crank but when I take it to the store and they test by connecting the "signal" wire to connection 50 (like yours used to be) the starter passes the test.

Does anyone know the difference between 15a and 50 signal wire connections?

Thank you for any light you can shed on this.......
