Starter only cranks for quarter of a second - 2.8Q 5speed starting problem

Starter only cranks for quarter of a second - 2.8Q 5speed starting problem
Sup everyone, I'm new here cause I just bought a black 97 A4Q 2.8 12v 5speed.
Not sure if this is an Audi thing or if I have a problem. When I crank the engine, it only engages the starter .25 of a second at a time. However, there has been a rare occasion that it cranks more than once - thus starting just fine.
Anyone know what the deal is? I've researched a **** ton to come up with nothing. I'd appreciate the help.
