Default Sunroof Opens / Closes by itself?

I have a 1996 A4Q2.8M and the sunroof sometimes opens by itself, then closes again while I'm driving. Anyone else seen this problem before? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Default Yeah. I had/have that.

Luckily, it doesn't do it when it is raining or snowing outside, generally just in normal weather. The problem is the potentiometer. Included below is a link to the part, it costs about $82. I will say though that mine hardly ever does it anymore, at most it will tilt up and down on its own when it gets hot outside.

If it is a potentiometer then what part of the switch do I clean? It isn't like a toggle switch with contacts like most pwr window switches. I'm not sure what to clean on this switch.

Default You don't. You buy a new one.

The potentiometers on our relatively early model cars (I have an early 98 built in mid-97) are faulty and don't last very long. Standard procedure at most dealerships is replacement, not cleaning...though that shouldn't be surprising, it really is because replacement is the better option.

Thanks, I'm going to replace... I just wondered what was meant by cleaning the existing one. I just don't understand which part of it can be cleaned. Wouldn't I have to disassemble the entire potentiometer to clean anything?

Unlucky for me, it seems to only open when it is raining and cold outside. Sometimes it just pops up and other times it opens all the way. Usually a swift knock with my hand on the switch gets it to behave again.

Thanks for the link... lots of parts for my car on there.

LOL, mine has been doing that. It sucks to be fighting the sunroof while trying to drive. Anyway I had an old Honda (sorry!) a few years ago with an aftermarket alarm / window modules. Alarm went off while I was in the movie theatre, came out to find car full of snow and sunroof wide open. Good anti-theft system.... set off alarm and the car lets the theif inside.

My Audi has never opened without key in ignition, not yet anyway! Knock on woodgrain.
