Sensor Problem: Engine has trouble idling when initially starting
Has anybody else encountered this?
I have a 2000 A4 2.8L V6 Quattro. I recently had a timing belt replaced at 95000miles along with all the other parts replaced when doing this task. However the morning after I brought my car home, after it had sat in the garage overnight, when I started my car up the engine seemed like it was gasping for air almost as the needle of the gauge oscillated up and down from about 500-1200rpm without ever stabilizing at 800rpm like it normally should. The check engine light came on...Eventually after about 10 seconds the engine shuts off by itself...after about 10 tries the engine finally started normally and I took it back to the shop (a certified audi delearship). They told me it may be sensor problems causing this. Mass o2 sensor, fuel sensor, perhaps. I do not have any aftermarket parts installed except for the air intake, which has been on there for the past 3 years without a problem. It is just wierd that I get all this work done on my car and all of the sudden I have problems the next morning...I asked around b/c i was curious why the engine started after a dozen tries, and why it started when I turned it on at the dealership and a friend of mine said maybe the car goes into a "safe mode" allowing me to drive for the time being but still recognizing that there still is a problem that needs to be checked. I have not noticed a drop in HP, I still get the same mileage as before, so it seems as though things are fine but just an electrical/sensor problem...the only thing is that the exhaust stinks like gasoline initially, making me think that maybe too much fuel is going in at the engine in the beginning until it neutralizes itself.
