Default Transmission FINALLY died. NEED answers on 2.8 tranny swap! DEAD

so as you may recall faithful readers, my tranny has been on the way out for a bit... loss of 5th gear, nasty noises, and the occasional loss of speedo...

well, at the audi car club chicago chapter autox at tirerack on saturday, I finally lost it... I came in too hot into the final slalom and lost a bunch of speed, so I blipped and downshifted into 1st (as I have done a million times before) and it went in WAY too easy... uh oh... So I stopped in the stop box, car in 1st, clutch on the floor, and it was making HORRIBLE noises and was catching... ****... so I made it out of the stop box (not without much more scary noises and eventaully, using 2nd and still having issues, I made it back to the parking area... a few phone calls later my mechanic (al @ chicago performance and tuning) is on his way with his trailer...

So he comes over, hops in the car, and drives about 5-8 feet... gets out and says "man, this thing is fvcked!"... exactly the words you want to hear from your mechanic...

So he took it to his shop and has found a few 2.8 Transmissions around... BUT

I need to know 100% that this swap is gonna work. I am thinking of those that I know have done it and I am confident it will work, but I want to be sure there are no surprises ahead of me...

so are who has done it, what year car, what year/code tranny... and what surprises if any were there...

I am 99% sure it will drop in without issue, but I want to be sure...

TIA!

Default It will drop in without issue. 100% no problem . Straight bolt in from the starter to the output

shafts and the transmission mounts.

Better gearing once you have more power. The same reason Audi put it in the 2.8

Default Better for driving...not drag racing.

But you folks know audi's are not drag racing machines right?

Default Actually it is better for drag racing too. The top of third on the 1.8t is ~92mph. The top of third

on the 2.8 tranny is ~102mph. If you have sufficient power to trap above 92 with in the 1.8t tranny you'll have to shift to 4th before the line. With the 2.8 tranny you can stay in 3rd.
