Default VW anoints ex-BMW boss

Europe's biggest car-maker Volkswagen has named former BMW boss Bernd Pischetsrieder as its new CEO.

Pischetsrieder will take over from current CEO Ferdinand Piech in April, next year.

"Dr Pischetsrieder will take over as chief executive of Volkswagen AG and as head of the Volkswagen brand on April 17, 2002," the company said in a statement.

As expected, Ferdinand Piech will be nominated to join the company's supervisory board at the next annual shareholders' meeting, the day before Pischetsrieder takes over. Piech is widely expected to take over as Volkswagen AG chairman.

VW shares rose 4.37 percent following the announcement of Dr Pischetsrieder's appointment.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen in Australia has again claimed best-selling European passenger car brand status, according to August sales results published by VFACTS.

According to VFACTS, VW sold 897 cars in August, eclipsing even Honda's 775 passenger cars sales.

On the strength of its 6,862 year-to-date sales, Volkswagen Group Australia says it is confident of beating the 10,000 sales mark established for the first year of the new wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.

Golf continued to be VW's biggest seller here (461 during August, despite shortages of 1.6-litre cars), with the new Bora the fastest mover - in more ways than one - in the range (159).

"We are beginning to see the benefits of our increased focus, improved product lineup and better stock levels," VW's Australian managing director Mr Peter Nochar said. "My congratulations to those Volkswagen dealers who continue to deliver these excellent results."

More grunt for S3

Audi has pumped an extra 11kW into its pocket rocket S3, taking maximum power to an even healthier 165kW.

The more powerful S3 goes on sale in Germany in this month, but Audi in Australia says it can't yet say when it will come here.

The new 165kW maximum power figure is the same as that in the quattro Audi TT.

With its 1.8-litre displacement, two charge-air intercoolers, a type K 04 turbocharger and a maximum boost pressure of 2.1 bar, this engine develops a meaty 280Nm of torque, available from 2,200rpm and maintained up to 5,500rpm. Maximum power arrives at 5,900rpm.

Top speed is said to be 243km/h top speed, and 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds.

Fuel consumption is said to be improved, however, at 9.3 litres of PULP per 100km.
