60K questions
in a about 600 miles I will hit the 60K mark on my 97.5 A4QM. I live in Baltimore. Is taking the car to the dealer best for the service? Or does anyone know of a local shop who could do the same service for a better price? Also i would like to put a K&N cone on, who makes a kit, or is the drop in a better choice? I purchased the car 2 months ago, and it is a dream! Quite a step up from my 95Golf GTI VR6. I still miss the sound of the GTI, anyway I can get that sound from my A4?????

Re: 60K questions
I dont know where you live near Baltimore, But there is a shop near my parents house
in Parkville that only works on VW and Audi. I think it is called Desmonds....They are located on Taylor Ave. I have not taken any cars to them but their lot is always full of
VWs and Audis. I might warn you though, It is not as pristine as Joe Gibbs NASCAR shop if you know what I mean.

You don't mention which engine you have...
...but be prepared for a big bill as you should have your timing belt replaced at 60k to be on the safe side.
Also, a cone-filter wouldn't really be rcommended on the 1.8T engine unless you fabricate some sort of cold-air intake. This is due to the placement of the stock airbox right next to the turbo.

Also, is it necessary to replace the water pump at this time? Thanks STNGRAY I'm going to check that shop out. Oh by the way I live near Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Charles Village

Re: Water Pump replacement...
...yes, I believe the consensus is that a wter pump change while they're replacing the timing belt is a wise move. I also seem to remember reading about a timing belt tensioner/pulley (something like that) that should be replaced while they're in there.

Re: Water Pump replacement...
Just got my '97 1.8T back from Heishman's yesterday. Had the standard 60K service done. They had to replace the valve cover gasket and also did a four wheel alignment. Total bill was $960 (ouch!)...most of it in labor charges ($700). Will be getting the timing belt replaced at the next service interval. As a side note, I provided them with the Mobil 1 and saved a little there. I found out when examining the bill I should have also provided them with wiper fluid as they charged me $6.75 for what amounts to a gallon or so of fluid. Ahhh, you live and learn.
Good luck,
