Where is the "rear axle code" on the differential?

Where is the "rear axle code" on the differential?
I need a new rear diff for my pre-facelift 1999 A4 1.8T MT Avant. I need to know where to look to find it.

The option code will tell you what diff is installed. DAJ I believe...... you need one from a 5 speed. 2.8 or 1.8T have the same one. Transmission gear ratios are different, but the diffs are the same.
The actual diff itself will be stamped on the bottom, underneath the ring gear area, but you'll have to scrape off the grime.
I can take a pic or mine if you can't find it.
