Default Yet another timing belt question...

1998 A4 Avant Quattro with 69K just recently changed my timing belt and was told by the Audi dealer that they checked the water pump and it was fine. My question is should I consider changing it anyway? Thanks.

Is it a 1.8 or a 2.8?

Default If you have it all apart, change it now and be done with it.

Do you want to pay to have it swapped later? Change the thermostat too.

Default On a 2.8 the pump is a must change. THere is no point in not chaning it,

when (not if) it fails, it will take your engine along with it if you don't catch it soon enough. Basically, the tiing belt drives the pump. When the pump fails, more often than not the bearings seize, and the pulley locks up. Then the belt drags over the pulley, and the belt gets shreaded.

Change it if the car is apart anyway. No-brainer. They don't last forever.

Do you think I should get one from shokan and let a private guy put it on or should I dealer it?

I stepped away, yup- that is why I asked - you must change the pump on a 2.8

Default The same dealer that didn't replace the pump at over 60k?

I'd look for an indie Euro mech.. The thing is, they will have to replace the belt again anyway, as you really shouldn't re-use a belt once you have taken tension off of it. It's a shame that the dealer didn't replace it, when the most common cause of premature belt failure is due to the pump failing.
