1.8 vs 2.0
I currently have (3) 1.8T, and a couple before these. I agree that they're a great motor. The 2.0 doesn't seem to enjoy the same reputation. Why is that?

The only thing I am aware of is the issue with excessive oil usage. Having said that, I know there is a settled class action, but I am always skeptical of stories like this because humans are involved and a settled class action doesn't impune anything...but that's my opinion. Oh, and Audis aren't the only with this issue. Below is a link to a good article on the subject especially the trend of these complaints.

It's not just the oil consumption, it's also the intake carbonization. They didn't fix that until 2013 model year. That causes a host of other issues if left unchecked. It's a shame, on the face of it, 1.8T and 2.0T are quite similar.

Was/is there an aftermarket fix for the gunk being introduced into the intake, which deals with it before it can plate out on the valves? I seem to recall seeing something being advertised years ago. I'm just glad that I don't have to deal with the 2.0's yet (69k,119k,132k).

Yup, 2.0T is direct injection. They added another injector on the intake in 2013, finally, and that fixed all the problems. And yes, there's a methanol water kit for $400 for 2.0T that also fixes the problem.
My mechanic has shown me engine bits from carbonized 2.0Ts. Not pretty. Damage to valvetrain, injectors and heads from the carbon buildup. If you're lucky, it's only $1000 for repair but can be much higher. If I had a 2.0T without the 5th injector, I'd have the kit.
1.8T is so blissfully problem-free, if you follow a good maintenance schedule.
