Default 2002 A4 3.0 cam timing

I have a 2002 A4 with 3.0 V6 ,
got the car with the timing belt removed, cannot find cam position marks and crank was not left at top dead center mark on timing belt cover. Crank moves a small amount but stops (sounds like it's hitting the valves)
does anybody have any advice on how to find the correct cam position and get the crank to move to top dead center? please help any help would be appreciated

You Must Install Front Timing Cover then Crank Pulley (install bolts for cover and 2 adjacent bolts for Crank Pulley to ensure proper alignment with TDC, rotate Crank to TDC Alignment Marks, if you can't rotate crank fully, then rotate the cams until you can. There are no "marks" for camgear alignment, you align with the holding tools.Position cams with the holding tools- Right Side, cyl #3 cam lobes up at 45deg toward each other (In and Ex),for placement of Left side cam holding tool cyl #4 intake lobes 45 deg pointed toward exhaust cam.

is there only one position that the cam locks will work or could they possibly be 180? I've also read that top dead center is on cylinder number 3, which cylinder is number 3?
Thanks for all your help 10speed
