Default 2004 A4 1.8

Hi. I'm thinking of purchasing a 2004 A4 with a 1.8 turbo for my daughter. I currently have an 09 A6. Any one have any info on the motor in the A4? Are there known problems or issues I should keep in mind in making my decision? The car is in mint condition, with only 80,000 miles - less than my 09! It does have a new water pump and timing belt, so that's a plus, but I'm not sure if there are any issues or not. Thanks in advance!

First, you need to make sure it has had regular synthetic oil changes; I would say every 5000 miles. If it has not, it may likely have sludge issues.

Second, you need to know if the timing belt has been changed. If not, it needs to be changed ASAP. Do the tensioner and water pump at the same time.

Third, check out the control arm bushings.

Fourth, read the first one again...

Everything else about the car is pretty solid.

Agree with lyleswk.
I purchased a 1.8T quattro for my son. Did the timing belt, water pump etc so if yours has been done thats a plus. The only other significant item was the thermostat which wasn't that hard to DIY. The 1.8T has been very reliable, much better than the 2.0T or my A6 Allroad 2.7TT which I have decided likes to leak just so it gets some attention.
