2005 a4 1.8t engine rattle
just purchased a ultrasport a4 the engine is rattling the sound sounds like its coming from the back of the engine could it be the cam shaft tensioner the rattling goes away when i rev to about 2000rpms and over

Well i took the valve cover off and it has a new tensioner but looks like they are not set correct the right cam is off a tooth to the right. Would that cause the missfires? Also any help on correcting the problem?

With the cam out by 1 tooth you will get the symptoms described, rattling and misfires.
How did you work out the it was 1 tooth out?
Anyway, you can purchase a cam tensioner compressing tool for $20-$40 for the Audi engine. ECS P/N 1306818 it has a plastic piece that fits nicely on the side of the tensioner next to the chain and pushes it down when you screw the bolt in (slowly) allowing the tension off the chain. The tool is available from all the on-line suppliers that support these sites, ECS, Europaparts etc. Also useful for removing the gasket and half moon seal from under the tensioner. If you are going to lift the tensioner you probably should think about replacing the gasket at the same time P/N 058198217 ($5) and maybe a new valve cover gasket 058198025A ($15). I know ECS sells a little kit that has everything including the tool, I am sure the other suppliers have equivalent parts and prices depending on where you are. Being in Australia I limit my suppliers to those with good international shipping rates.

I counted the notches on the chain the right cam is not centered the notch that is supposed to line up is a tooth over and i found that this tensioner is new so im thinking the guy i bought it from did it wrong and the the cam is just not set right do i just loosen the cam and turn it manually after applying the tensioner tool
