Default 3.0L Burning Oil?

Hello,

I got a 2002 Audi A4 3.0L that is burning about 1 quart every 1000 miles.

The car has about 165,000 miles.

It doesn't seem to have any blue smoke from the exhaust...think I be able to really see it with it burning that much oil.

I just replaced the spark plugs (thought maybe I see something), no abnormal wear on them or signs of bad rings.

I was unable to do a compression check when I replaced the plugs. However, the engine runs great, or at least the same as when I got it about 20K miles ago.

There are no leaks WHAT SO EVER under the car, or on any signs of a leak on the engine parts.

I check the dipstick every time the LOW OIL LIGHT goes on...it supports the low light.

I really at a lose of what / where the oil is going? Wondering if anyone has had this issue or any ideas.

My 2 cents:

Yes, that is high, but it's right on the edge of "normal", meaning unless there is another cause (maybe some 3.0 owners have ideas), it would not drive any action. I drove a Ford 2.3 turbo for 6 years with oil consumption about in that range. Has the car always had regular oil changes with synthetic?

I just sold a 185k Passat that I bought from the original owner at 45k. It always had synthetic timely changes, but towards the end was using a half quart every other fill up. It ran fine, I never saw leakage or smoke either.

It sounds as if your oil consumption is steady. I would suggest you do what I did, on the basis of fill ups. Waiting for a low oil light to come on sounds potentially dangerous.

Read consumer reports article on excessive oil use by some engines. It was a few months ago.

Thanks guys,

W261w261, you are right. I will start checking the oil more often and not rely on the LOW OIL light.
