Annoying whining noise when idling
Hi!
My 2001 2.0L petrol engined A4 is suffering a strange whining sound audible in the cab when idling. It is normally most noticeable once the car has been running for a few minutes, not immediately after start up. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the car, so I don't think it is the fuel pump. The strange thing is that it can only be heard in the cabin and can't be heard in the engine bay!
It isn't noticeable once the car is moving and the revs increase from idle.
I've had the car for 12 months and haven't had any reliability problems or any other issues, so I don't think its a major problem, but it is getting very annoying, as the car idles very sweetly apart from this whining noise.
Just wondered if anyone could please suggest what to look for to try to sort this out....

Are you sure it's in the engine and not inside the cabin?
I had the same sort of noise on my sons VW Golf 2.0l petrol engine.
There is a servo motor on the internal air reticulation that puts the air to the footwell/front/windscreen.
After pulling half the dash apart to trace the noise, turns out this little servo motor was just sort of 'feathering' back and forth, sort of stuck and making this annoying whining noise.
If you have a VCDS you can do an adaptation to try and get it to relearn the full open/ closed parametres otherwise replace. The equivalent for the Audi is P/N #8E1820511 if you want to look it up. There is about 6 different ones with different colours levers so you can identify which one is which for your model. the good news is the Audi part is about $70, the same VW is $270 and only available from the stealer.
Or you can do what my son did- turn the volume up on the music so you can't hear it. (young people - what can I say!!)

Thanks for the responses. The power steering fluid was a little below minimum so I topped it up. At first it didn't seem to make a difference, but after a sort run it seems to have improved a lot. Hopefully that's sorted it....
