engine ticking noise
Hey everyone,
We just replaced the camshaft tensioner on my 2003 A4 1.8L (non-quattro), topped up the oil and it's still making this noise:
(My buddy is in the driver seat revving it a bit)
I know the coolant container should be clear instead of dark... I'll be draining it and replacing the current coolant with the genuine Audio coolant next time I change the oil.
Any ideas on why the engine is still making this sound? Thank you!

It seems to be a lifter noise. To be sure you can get one of these
they are pretty cheap and will allow you to isolate the engine noises. just be careful when using one of these around any moving parts. I also should warn you to be gentle when putting on to any surface as bumping it into something can sound rather loud if done to hard...... Hope this helps

Have you driven it? Sometimes they need to be driven for the lifters to pump back up. Higher rpms and idle. You arnt getting any kind of oil pressure light when you drive it for awhile do you? I would fear oil pickup tube getting clogged up. If it is clogged or you have low pressure pull the oil pan and inspect. You may just want to replace the pump and tube if thats the case.

Mine makes a similar noise, but only when I first start it. I believe mine is an exhaust leak that seals after it warms up a bit. Yours could very well be a lifter though. As for that mechanics stethoscope, instead of spending money on something like that, try something i've been using for years. Just make sure the big end goes to your ear
