Default Newbie with cracked block and ?

Hi,
Just picked up an 2003 A4 quattro with 1.8T. It's a nice car with less than 100K miles. I "thought" it was just a head gasket failure, but now find out it's cracked block. Head is good. Go figure.

What are my options for motor swaps with minimal drama?
Passat 1.8 ? what years
Any other Audi motors? How new?
I've got a 2.0 out of an 03 Jetta, but don't know if the blocks are compatible.
Is there a link with some of the above info?

Thanks for any help
Doug

Look for a 1.8 with matching engine code for a minimal drama motor swap. I think AMB is the engine code you are looking for. You certainly can put other motors in, but the farther you get from the original motor, the more complicated the job becomes.

Is it possible to tell from the VIN # what the engine code is?
I may be buying a donor car, sight unseen.
Thanks !!

Can I swap in a 2007 2.0T ? I've found a nice one.
Is there another resource for this info?
Thanks a bunch.

An Audi dealer could get motor information from looking up the VIN. And sure, 2.0t would work in there. Get the ECU and wiring harness.

Like I said though, the easiest route is to drop in an identical 1.8t, and they are out there. You can put a Ford motor in there, it's just more work to hook up. Inspect the cam follower on the 2.0t before you buy that motor.
