Strange clanking sound when going over bumps?
Just took my car to the dealership for a metallic clanking noise I'm getting whenever I go over any bumps. I really hope it's nothing expensive. The good news is that I got an A6 2.7t s-line for a loaner! I love that 2.7t. It makes me want to get a B5 S4!

I believe it has something to do with the spring retaining clips on the brakes
if Im not mistaken. I have the same problem. there has been a few quick fixes posted here on AW. I've been just ignoring the sound of mine. Just do a search and you should find a way to fix the trouble because dealer for some reason has no clue

How would the spring retaining clips make a clanking sound though?
You mean that they aren't retaining properly and the caliper is clanking? That actually would maybe make sense because I did my front brakes about a month ago. But everything was done correctly. Hmmmm...... I don't know.

Re: Strange clanking sound when going over bumps?
Hey I think I have the same problem. I just had my front brakes done (new rotors and pads) on my A4. Whenever I go over a bump there is now a loud clanking noise coming from the wheel well. I have noticed though that if you are applying the brakes and go over the bump there is no noise, theoretically because the caliper can't move as it is compressing the pads tight.
Can someone explain what the problem is in more detail and what the fix is so I can inform the shop what to do (not that I should have to...)

The dealer told me that it's my "aftermarket pads" don't fit w/ the spring clip correctly.
I'm trying to figure out how to fix this issue now. Someone mentioned brake lube. ?????
